Is this Adam Sandler’s best movie? You be the judge This image released by A24 shows Adam Sandler in a scene from "Uncut Gems. " Sandler failed to get an Oscar nomination for best lead actor for his role in the film. (A24 via AP) When the trailer for “Uncut Gems” came out in fall 2019, many people (including this writer) were skeptical of the movie. Adam Sandler in a high-stakes crime drama in which he doesn’t play a goofy man child? And then the movie finally hit theaters, and all the skepticism of Sandler’s ability to play a serious role was quickly wiped away. Sandler transforms into Harold Ratner, a charismatic New York City jewelry store owner who is in over his head with sports gambling. He owes a lot of people a lot of money, and we get to watch Ratner make deal after deal, just waiting for it all to implode. It is quite jarring to see Sandler in such a dramatic role. We’re used to seeing him play bumbling buffoons who barely have their lives together, but after you’ve watched “Uncut Gems, ” you realize that Ratner isn’t that much different from Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore. Much like Sandler’s other characters, Ratner is living in a fantasy world where the rules don’t apply to him. His estranged wife (played by Broadway vet and the voice of Elsa in “Frozen, ” Idina Menzel), is constantly making sure he isn’t getting himself in trouble, yet Ratner can’t help himself from looking for the next big deal. At the end of the day, he is his own worst enemy. Once the movie was released last fall, it garnered a cult following of fans, and most people were shocked that the film was snubbed at this year’s Oscars. Not only were fans and critics upset that the movie wasn’t nominated for Best Picture, but Sandler himself was also snubbed for a Best Actor nomination. It would have made for a great story, too. Sandler, one of the world’s biggest movie stars, does a dramatic role that really lets him flex his acting chops -- what a great narrative for awards season. But apparently, it just wasn’t in the cards. We can only hope Sandler got a boost of acting confidence with this role in “Uncut Gems. ” Not that any of his latest project are that bad, but do we really need another “Grown-Ups” movie? More of Sandler (and other comedic actors, frankly) in semi-serious roles, please! You have to close the first door before opening the second. One of them would have had to buzz the other out, while being stuck inside. Neither had the fob. There were police sirens. I think they would have ended up dead or in jail. I really like the movie more, the day after I saw it, and had some time to ponder. It was really good! Howard was figuratively an uncut gem. Adventurous audiences loved it. Even the Academy…Well, they probably did, but not enough to get Adam Sandler an Oscar nomination. If you got mauled by the relentless, noisy, vice-tightening style — and loved every second of it — and you’re looking for more movies like Uncut Gems, we’ve got a spread of 20 for you to challenge and throttle the senses. Uncut Gems was directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, two brothers who’ve honed their intimate filmmaking over several features. They really gained traction with heroin drama Heaven Knows What, and 2017’s Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson trapped in a similar anxiety-inducing trip as the one Sandler’s unscrupulous jeweler, Howard, goes on in Uncut Gems. Howard is largely driven by his addiction to high-stakes gambling, a potentially lethal path to go down also seen in Rounders, The Gambler, and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. The fashionable hell Howard has created for himself invites many players of the criminal world in, and Uncut Gems is in many ways that classic kind of thriller where a small player cobbles together a risky plan to bet against the underworld, hoping for that big score. Some of the best that this grim genre has to offer: The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, The Pope of Greenwich Village, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Thief (if you can’t find this, try Collateral, another Michael Mann nocturnal classic), and Sidney Lumet’s final film, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Conversely, The Long Good Friday and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Pusher III: I’m the Angel of Death (you can generally watch this without having seen the other Pusher s) are from the kingpin’s perspective, which show that when you know everybody, everybody’s potentially out to kill you. Of course, plenty of Uncut Gems fans admire the nerve-wracking pace, where problems just pile up one after the other, frequently because characters just can’t get out of their own way. If you’re looking for more of that, seek out Dog Day Afternoon, Victoria (an after-hours thriller legitimately shot in one take), Running Scared (a fan favorite with Paul Walker), Whiplash, and Run Lola Run. Howard is arguably Sandler’s most memorable character ever: A man in deep agitation, both financial and existential in nature. You can find more deep character work from the likes of Dustin Hoffman in Straight Time, about a thief who struggles to abide by society’s pecking order after release from jail. Or Nicolas Cage in Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead as a burned-out philosophical paramedic who red-eyes across multiple New York shifts. And Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant, a crooked cop who loses the will to make sound decisions. These movies lay the pressure on their wayward protagonists, compressing, until out comes, well, some gritty gems of filmmaking. #20 Adjusted Score: 45. 061% Critics Consensus: This film runs with frenetic energy punctuated by gratuitous violence but sorely lacks in plot, character development and stylistic flair.
